Let's Uncover Elderly Abuse

Elderly abuse in nursing home (s) is a terrible blight on our society and must be stopped.  Intentional or unintentional abuse of a person over the age of sixty is considered aged abuse... The aged,  being more vulnerable, are often the target of many abuse cases.  Recent reports indicate an alarmingly increasing trend of abuse cases in the United States in many nursing homes and elsewhere. Such abuses can happen anyplace.  At home, at residential facilities, in public, at hospitals, financial institutions, nursing homes, retirement centers... everywhere. The abusers range from family members, friends, relatives, spouses, caregivers, lawyers, bankers, partners, doctors, or even strangers.  Not only is it shameful, it's actually frightening what might lay ahead for the future dependents...namely...us!

Abuse can take any form... physical, mental, emotional, sexual, and others

What often can happen is the caregivers are unable to cope with the demands of the aged and the time it takes to care of them.  Then out of frustration they can inflict abuse leading to abuse cases.  Such abuse could be physical infliction of hitting, beating, and sometimes evening causing death.  Reports of abuse cases trickle in many numbers from various residential and assisted care living facilities.  Of course, there are many cases which go unreported. 

Another situation is the aged normally have various ailments. However, health care professionals in nursing homes will not provide the necessary care. They can harass them for even the simplest of requirements and needs.  For instance, making them wait for long hours for small checkups or not even conducting a checkup at all.  The list can go on and on.  Sometimes, they also face many mental challenges and therefore, are a soft target for the abusers. Sometimes, in many abuse cases, the caregiver or other relative are unable to cope with the pressures and therefore, vents out their incapacity in the form of abuse. 

Recent trends indicate increased awareness against such abuse cases

Federal programs, social service and support organizations are trying their best to lower the incidence of such abuses. The National Long-Term-Care Ombudsman Resource Center provides good help in locating safe nursing homes and other residential facilities.  But, federal, state, county or local agencies can't stop it all.  We, as individuals have to do our part to watch for, report and do whatever we can to lower this terrible disgrace of elderly abuse in nursing home and elsewhere.
