Are You Elderly? Over the age of Sixty?
If so, you and I are called the elderly Advanced adult, pensioner, or senior citizens, elderly people, whatever you want to call us, are other synonyms for getting old. Such people, as us, are nearing the average life expectancy of our time on earth.. Normally, the elderly retire from
their active employment and jobs. Women senior citizens are eligible for state pension from the age of sixty while male seniors can avail state pensions from the age of sixty-five.
Some state governments in the United States also provide many redeemable retirement savings plans. Although, that seems to be getting worse the people who’ve worked most their lives. When we get older we develop diseases, sicknesses, and various other syndromes like arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, elderly diabetes, vision problems, strokes, heart attacks and other problems due to our decreasing levels of their degenerative abilities.
The name of the diseases commonly afflicting senior citizens is called geriatrics. Gerontology refers to the medical study of aging process in humans. Often, older people have to face many social, financial and economic problems in their waning days. Many have to stay alone due to various reasons...maybe their spouses have predeceased them. Their children are busy attending to their work, and their own lives at far-flung places. Or, sometimes, the senior citizen is a bachelor, and unmarried woman, or divorced. Hence, loneliness is a major chronic problem in the elderly.
Although it shouldn’t be, economic concerns are no less and maybe even compounded for the elderly
Many do not find employment (assuming they want to work, and can) and face discrimination due to their age. Many have to subsist on meager savings, pensions or retirement earnings. Also, many are unable to procure basic comforts for their houses like central heating, car, and others. However, there are many well-off seniors too. Of course, there are various residential homes and sheltered housing provisions for the elderly and retired.
With elderly assistance, they can lead an independent life but also benefit from emergency medical and other facilities. Furniture and residential features are suitable to the needs of the seniors like extra rails, stair lifts, powered vehicles, alarm systems and so on. These benefits can help to make them feel safer and more secure. People with military retired pay, since they are retired military could always use the Veterans Administration facilities
